Colorado Scenic Road Trips
The most beautiful driving routes in the state — Trail Ridge Road, the San Juan Skyway, the Million Dollar Highway, and more.
Colorado was made for road trips. The state's scenic byways climb above tree line, switchback through canyons, and skirt aspen groves that turn gold in fall. The five routes below are the most legendary — each one earns its own day (or two) in any Colorado itinerary.
Trail Ridge Road (RMNP)
The highest paved through-road in the U.S., topping 12,183 ft inside Rocky Mountain National Park. 48 miles between Estes Park and Grand Lake. Best in summer and early fall; closed November–May.
San Juan Skyway
A 233-mile loop through southwest Colorado linking Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Telluride, Dolores, and Mesa Verde National Park. Allow 2–3 days. Some of the most underrated scenery in the country.
Million Dollar Highway (US 550)
The 25-mile stretch from Silverton to Ouray — narrow lanes, no guardrails, and absolutely stunning. White-knuckle in winter, spectacular in summer.
Peak to Peak Highway
55-mile route from Estes Park to Black Hawk through Nederland. Dense pine and aspen, wildlife sightings, and Front Range overlooks. Best for fall color drives close to Denver.
Independence Pass
The summer-only mountain pass between Aspen and Twin Lakes, topping 12,095 ft. Stunning alpine tundra and lake views. Open late May through October, weather permitting.
Travel tips
- Carry a full tank — gas stations are sparse in mountain country.
- Download offline maps before heading out; cell service vanishes.
- Stop at every pull-out — the best views are rarely from the road.
- Watch for sudden mountain weather; carry layers and water.
- Never consume cannabis while driving — Colorado enforces a 5 ng/mL THC blood DUI limit.
