15 miles west of Denver in Morrison, Red Rocks is one of the most famous outdoor concert venues in the world. The 9,525-seat amphitheater is wedged between two 300-foot sandstone monoliths. Hike the Trading Post Trail in the morning, see a show at night. Concert season runs April – November; consumption is prohibited inside the venue.

Rocky Mountain National Park

An hour and a half northwest of Denver via Estes Park. Trail Ridge Road is the highest paved through-road in the U.S., topping out above 12,000 ft. Don't miss Bear Lake, Sprague Lake, and the Alpine Visitor Center. Timed-entry permits are required May–October.

Garden of the Gods

A free, otherworldly red-rock park in Colorado Springs (~70 minutes south of Denver). Easy paved trails, Pikes Peak views, and some of the best photography in the state. Open daily, free entry, and family-friendly.

Mount Falcon Park

The best big-view hike close to Denver. Multiple loop options ranging 1.5 to 7.5 miles with sweeping panoramas of the Front Range and the city skyline. 35 minutes from downtown Denver, free parking, and dogs welcome on leash.
