Indoor vs. outdoor growing
Indoor gives control: light cycles, humidity, pests. Outdoor gives scale and free sunlight but locks you into the season. Most beginners start indoors with a small tent for repeatable results.
Lighting basics
LED full-spectrum
Lower heat, low electricity, plug-and-play. Modern boards run cool and last for years.
CFL bulbs
Cheap entry for tiny grows; not enough for large yields.
HPS / HID
Massive yields, massive heat. Skip unless you've grown before.
Soil & nutrients
Start with a pre-amended living soil. It does most of the feeding for you. Beginners often over-fertilize — when in doubt, give plain water and watch.
Watering tips
Water when the top inch of soil is dry and the pot feels light. Overwatering kills more first grows than under-watering. Use water that's sat 24 hours to off-gas chlorine.
Beginner equipment
Grow tent (2x2 or 2x4)
Light-proof, easy to set up, perfect first environment.
LED light
100–200W LED handles a small tent comfortably.
Carbon filter + fan
Smell control and airflow — non-negotiable indoors.
Hygrometer
Track temperature and humidity. Cheap and revealing.
pH meter
Soil and water pH affect nutrient absorption.
Trimming scissors
Sharp, clean, dedicated to your harvest.
Growth stages
Seedling (1–2 weeks) → vegetative (3–6 weeks) → flowering (7–10 weeks) → harvest. Each phase has different light, humidity, and feeding needs. Auto-flowering strains shorten the timeline.
Harvest basics
Watch the trichomes (resin glands) under a magnifier. Mostly cloudy with some amber is the typical sweet spot. Cut, hang in a dark room at 60°F and 60% humidity, dry for 10–14 days, then cure in jars for at least two weeks.
Common beginner mistakes
Don't peek constantly
Frequently asked
How much will I yield?
A first-time indoor grow in a 2x4 tent often produces 4–10 ounces total. Skill and equipment grow that number.
Is it legal to grow at home?
State-dependent. Many recreational states allow 4–6 plants per household. Always check local rules.
Do I need expensive equipment?
No. A solid first grow runs under $400 for tent, light, fan, and basics.
